Alex Borg maintained his status as Malta national champion on Friday night last following a 7-2 victory in the final over Duncan Bezzina. The final, at the Anglo Maltese League Club, Valletta was played in front of a sizeable crowd and under the control of referee Joe Debono.
This is the ninth national title and seventh in a row for Borg who plays for Juventutis Domus of Zejtun.
It was Bezzina who took the first frame of the final with a 60-36 score but Borg showed some very good form in the frames after and with breaks of 42, 58, 79, 68 and 56 took a commanding lead of 5-1 going into the mid-session interval. When play resumed Borg quickly won the seventh frame helped by a break of 44. Bezzina made it 6-2 with a break of 44 in the eight but it was Borg who clinched victory in the ninth with breaks of 48 and 60 for a final score of 7-2 and the title of national champion.

After the final, MBSA President Mr. Joe Caruana Curran presented the trophy to Alex Borg and augured both players for their international commitments later this year.
Borg’s next commitment will be the European Snooker Championships which will be held in Belgium in June. He will then take part in the final stages of the Sangsom 6 red World Grand Prix which takes place in Bangkok, Thailand in July. In November Borg and Bezzina will represent Malta in the IBSF World Snooker Championships in Hyderabad, India.
