Success for Thailand over Iran

E-mail Print PDF

Thailand's Noppon Saengkham was crowned the 2009 World Under-21 Champion yesterday despite a spirited comeback from Iran's own Soheil Vahedi.

The talented Thai player led by 8 frames to 4 at one stage only for the local favourite to make a superb comeback to 8-8.

However it was the young Thai player who held his nerve and eventually saw out the final frame and take the title and the main tour nomination for the 2010/11 season.

He made it through to the final of this event with some superb results including a comprehensive 6-0 win over fellow Thai player Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon and a superb 7-6 win over Liu Chuang.

The young Iranian player however will certainly have a bright future ahead of him also after both this and his performance in the 2008 World Championships where he reached the semi finals.

Although it was not the World Under-21 Championships that everyone wanted to see due to the withdrawl of the European players it did however go ahead and hopefully the IBSF are working on next years event already as too many World Under-21's have been missed in recent years.
