Cope in pole position

Jamie Cope is in pole position after day one of the latest instalment of the Championship League thanks to superb wins over Ricky Walden, Dave Harold and Barry Hawkins. Cope should only now need at least one win against Robertson, Ebdon or Williams tomorrow to secure his playoff place for tomorrow evening.

Both Robertson and Ebdon however are hot on his heals with Ebdon having three superb wins over Walden, Robertson and Williams to keep him in touch with Cope although having played one more match.

World Series event cancelled

Snooker Scene's Dave Hendon is reporting on his blog that the World Series Event scheduled for Saudi Arabia next month has now had to be cancelled. Apparently Eurosport have been unable to secure the necessary broadcast licences to enable them to broadcast from the Kingdom.

This is yet another blow to John and his manager Pat Mooney who have run into several stumbling blocks in the first two years of this venture. With Mooney now a board member at the WSA one would have thought that the World Series would now go from strength to strength but this latest setback may force them to rethink the direction of the series, as Dave suggests in his article. Brecel's latest 147

Belgium’s young snooker prodigy Luca Brecel, pictured here with Mark Allen is fast becoming one of the finest junior players ever seen and due to his youtube video's we certainly are able to see plenty of him. Luca has only recently uploaded what was his 54th 147 break in practice up to the video sharing site.

Much has been made of his potential and it's clear that he has the talent, dedication and support system behind him to make it far in the game, how far we will just have to wait and see. It would be nice to be able to compare him to other juniors at that age by comparing practice and match video's.

Hat trick for Hearn

Barry Hearn has made a huge difference to the way World Snooker and the sport in general is now viewed. A couple of months ago you would find it hard to get excited about the future of the game but now it seems to be buzzing as one tournament rolls into another.

Todays announcement that the China Open sponsor will be Sanyuan Foods is now the third major sponsor that the chairman has produced since his appointment to the position. It's also good to see that the sport can attract more than just the gambling industry as a sponsor.

Totesport.com Welsh Open

The Welsh open is now only a few days away and Barry Hearn has done it yet again by securing a major name sponsor for his second event in a row. Totesport.com will be the official sponsors for the event which kicks off on the 25th at the Newport Centre with Ali Carter aiming to retain the title he won last season.

This is the first sponsor the Welsh Open has seen in a few years and comes on the back of news that Barry had singled it out for the axe unless it became more self financing. The one year agreement has given the sport the boost it needs to carry on this mini revolution as Barry aims to bring snooker up to the times.

Trump through to finals

Last years Championship League champion Judd Trump is through to the finals of this season's event after he won today's Group 3 final beating Mark Allen 3-2 in the final.

Trump finished first in the group losing out only to Stephen Hendry 3-2 early on yesterday which rather surprisingly was Hendry's only win over the two days play.

Parker and Mooney co-opted

Both Brandon Parker and Pat Mooney have been co-opted today to the board of the WSA while Dr.Hamish McInnes resignation has been accepted by Barry Hearn.

The addition of both influential characters means that Barry Hearn has now put his own stamp on the board and should see the board better placed to take advantage of emerging markets in Europe. Read more...

Prizepotter

Barry Hearn has talked about a new tournament that he's mad to run as part of his overhaul of the snooker calendar. The Idea will shock the traditionalists of snooker as he aims to have a one frame shootout over one weekend with the World's Top 64.

Sounds ok so far until you get to the part about 12 minutes a frame, ball in hand, 20 sec shot clock, party atmosphere, free flowing beer, no over 35's allowed and walks of shame for the losers, then basically, it sounds great!
